After nearly a half dozen attempts, the state legislature finally completely banned commercially-owned video poker machines and video gaming machines in 2007.

The state of North Carolina and the federally-recognized Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians negotiated a tribal-state compact in 1994. This gaming compact only allows for Class III video games which include an element of skill or dexterity.

While owned by the tribe, both casinos are operated by Harrah’s which, itself, is owned by Caesars Entertainment. The tribe operates a high-stakes bingo hall.
